What’s missing with Productivity?
Most problems with productivity today is because there are a few key issues (at least in my experience). These are:
- If your organization portrays to be flexible, but the people complain day in and out about Change Request, how cumbersome the applications they work on are then don’t put in an inflexible IT system and/or IT process. As having a non flexible IT process or system does not make you flexible.
- Process is good. Process is necessary. Create a process that allows for flexibility, speed and change. I have seen companies hire N number of Managers, be it a Programme manager, Test Manager, Project Manager, Support Manger and the list can go on. If your organization is flexible then inspite of so many managers why is the process cumbersome. The IT world has changed and larger companies who claim to be well versed in IT need to follow the Mantra of being flexible and adapting to change. It’s no good setting up a Change Request process or a PMO if at the end of the day the people who have to follow it hate it with a passion. Dictatorship does not work
- Managers need to understand that in order to get the most of their teams; they need to clearly outline the responsibilities and expectations. Without clear communication, people will spend time trying to determine what they should be doing and/or who should be doing it. It’s equally important to give credit if someone has tried to go the extra mile to save a project. People like to be treated well. It’s such a simple formula but rarely have I seen Managers practice this. Granted you do get the occasional team member who abuses freedom be a dictator to them not to the ones who add value.
- With good leadership, an organization can overcome many things. Just because someone has had tons of experience in Project management does not necessarily mean they are leaders. People who work without Titles and deliver are leaders not those who have to reiterate that they are the Manager.
