Focus & Simplify - Life as an Entrepreneur using social media

The whole blah blah about trying to avoid office gossip is a tricky one. Having been a contractor or a consultant of some sort I guess I move in and out of projects and large Corporates. No matter how much you try one day or the other you get caught up with some kind of political gossip. It’s strange but true for some reason people will talk to strangers about things they would not want their close friends and work mates to know. The back stabbing goes on in and out and avoiding this is utter stupidity.

When I started my career my grand dad told me avoid talking or mixing with people who gossip. I tried following this track. As usual there is a but, sometimes when people are talking you don’t want to be the outcast for not participating in the juicy hot gossip festival. Having said this you need to make sure you don’t want your reputation to be tarnished by being associated with the queen or king of office gossip.

My advice here, though it may sound lame is to be very careful and participate only in office gossip that isn’t hurting anyone. Talk about the corporate changes that are happening in the business or what courses are currently being offered in similar organizations, when you plan taking a break, whether you plan catching up with work mates for drinks, who has received a promotion, etc. Talk safe, do not and I say do not talk about people that you work with cause you never know who in that circle is your sweet back stabber, no matter how close you are to them. If some one is frustrated with someone and is venting their frustration listen to them and empathize with them, do not go any further unless you are ready to walk the mile to resolve this issue.

I remember once I said to the person sitting opposite me god I wish I was not working on this project as it sucks. The next thing I know is the same comment has been taken in multiple ways. My manager thinks he sucks, my close friend working on the project thought that i felt she was slacking, my team thought that I felt my project sucked because they F***** up. I was taken a back but the reality is comments taken out of context seem to be the hot gossip for office gossipers so BEWARE. They twist and bend a situation for its sex appeal. If ever you hear something that is concerning a person don’t be scared to ask questions and get the real story from multiple people involved. Don’t trust gossip or tales from one source.Be careful when disclosing HOT gossip to workmates as they may be the gossip center. There is no worse enemy than a gossip queen or king. When you identify a gossip queen or king let them dig their own grave. They usually do at some point, lol!!! Tell yourself you have better things to do then entertain them with HOT gossip straight off the press.
