Whether you like Madonna’s music or not, the fact is she is one of the top pop star’s in the world and is still going strong with a huge fan base. Let’s walk through some of her secret weapon marketing strategies.
Never give up as a small business:

When we setup a business we start off with a great amount of energy. Our friends and acquaintances tell us how cool we are, yet we notice that sales are not rolling in as we thought it would. Madonna will tell you that this is a part and parcel of walking through the small business marketing world.
The key here is to stay strong and not give up. When Madonna moved to New York she has $35 in her pocket and started her humble beginning by working as a waitress. It took her a few years before she had her first break in the music industry. The same applies to your small business, you need to be persistent and not give up.
Change is necessary within your small business marketing strategy:
Madonna has mastered the art of change. With every season her trend and personality changes to suit the mood and the environment. She play’s along the same track as Mother Nature. When it’s summer she acts like the summer season and when it’s winter she is ready to welcome winter.
Now you can whine and morn about how your small business marketing is not performing like you don’t have sufficient funds to market effectively, or you need to do everything by yourself, etc. As a small business you will be growing both intellectually, physically and spiritually.
Yet so often we get stuck with recognizing only one aspect in our business marketing methods. Today the world has moved from the industrial age to the Information and Internet age.

The old traditional marketing is not working, so why go and advertise on newspapers, brochures, create marketing collateral that collects dust, why not adapt modern methods to leverage your marketing initiatives using social media, web advertising, bloggers, etc. So how is your small business doing in this age?
Are you well equipped in welcoming the new trend like Madonna does? Let’s imagine you run a small business consulting firm or are in the process of setting up a small business consulting firm, how have you marketed your strengths? Most consultants will talk about how good they are or what services they can offer, but is this, what your customer wants to hear or does your customer want information about their own business?
If you are smart you will change to the way your customer behaves. Give away information that your customer is looking for and stop talking about yourself or your brand. Small business sales and marketing trends are now moving to the way Madonna adapted her personality.
Madonna adapted and transformed herself to what her fans wanted her to be. Look at her track record right from material girl, virgin, dominatrix, media maven to working mom. That’s a blend of different personalities in one person. Similarly as a small business you have the power to adapt and change faster than some of the big guys. Use this to your advance. Don’t worry about working on a shoe string budget prioritize what will grow your business needs.
Cross all boundaries and be limitless:
Sometimes what tends to happen is our fear to get out of our comfort zone and try new things. We get stuck in a rut and think that is all there is to growing our small business. The reality though is the complete opposite. If you can move out of your comfort zone you can conquer great heights.
Look at Madonna she has tried various strategies to uplift her career these included working as a waitress, playing the guitar and drums for a band, singing, writing books for children and many others. She tried out different options to get to where she is today.

The same applies to your small business sales and marketing strategy, you need to try our different marketing strategies and experiment what works and does not work. The marketing techniques that fail when you try don’t be disheartened, learn from it and move forward.
As a singer and a music artist she has stuck to the game the only difference is she replanted her vision and her brand to suit the market. Look at Coke they have reinvented their brand through their packaging options the contents of the bottle remain the same, but the bottle itself has gone through various packaging options from bottles to cans to PET bottles.
The same applies to McDonalds, they reinvented Convenience to healthy lunch boxes for kids, and they tailored their pricing to match people’s spending power along with making profits.
Understand what sells:
Look at how the Kiwi fruit was rebranded, it used to be known as Chinese gooseberry. Now the Kiwi fruit depicts an image in a human’s eye as clean, green, exotic from a clean green country. Madonna does the same she changes her avatar and her style to depict fresh, sexy, upper class, exotic trends. Too often we look at branding as a science that needs radical changes when in fact all we need to focus on is outsourcing some of our marketing requirements to skilled people who know the art of transformation.
If you cannot afford to create marketing strategy for your small business, then look at options such as small business grants. Apply to government organizations for a grant to assist your small business to grow.

When I look at Madonna she has always worn sexy outfits and acts crazy. Her image is a sexy image and you know what, sex sells to a great extent. Of course it’s understanding how to repackage sex to fit your specific offering. Look at Nike their shoes are sexy. Look at Moo cards they repackaged the way business card printing is looked at.
The same way look at how you can repackage your small business marketing offer to fit the basic instinct known to human beings. The classic and the most relevant example today is the ipad, Apple has changed the way people look at owning an Apple product.
Can you walk the talk for your small business?
Madonna has mastered the art of reinvention unlike some other singers who come up with a great hit and vanish in thin air. Setting up a small business is no easy task and if you have gone down this path then you need to take responsibility and start marketing your small business startup in ways that will enrich their experience and grow your startup, while providing value.
It’s important that you stand strong and deliver what you say. Look at any music artist their one album can make or break their future. If you see Britney Spears her target market when she started out were teenagers and her music is pop, she sticks to it. If you look at Elton John his music stands for Rock, glam rock, soft rock and he pretty much sticks with this type of music.

The same applies to your small business startup you need to stick to what you do best and outsource areas of your business to others who would add value to getting your startup recognized as walking the talk. If you are a small business marketing services company then look for ways to differentiate yourself yet stay true to marketing.
This means depicting a sexy web presence, a sexy yet funky web copy that client’s would love to read about, a great avatar within the social media space. Plan your marketing strategy well before you start planning in opening a small business or re structuring your small business.
