I want a blog which platform should i choose and what’s my next step?

August 18th, 2010 | 3 Comments | Posted in Digital News, Web Business Life Strategy

So you have finally made the decision to go with a blog for your startup. That’s great . Now you may have additional questions such as:

  • Where do i start?
  • How do i go about it?
  • Which blogging platform should i choose?
  • Do i need to buy a domain or can i register for a free blog and upgrade when traffic picks up?

Well today we cover these questions along with with a short implementation plan that you may find useful to follow should you wish to go ahead. The most important task that you need to remember is not choosing a platform but deciding if blogging is the right path for you long term.

The next set of questions are important

  • What is the purpose of this blog? Is it for fun or for your startup venture?
  • Do you plan generating revenue from your blog? or is it going to be a resource section for your target audience?
  • How Often do you planning updating your blog? Daily, Weekly, Monthly adhoc?
  • Do you feel that you would run advertisements on your blog?
  • Would you see yourself opening your blog for other guest writers to submit their posts to be featured on your blog?
  • Now if your blog is to represent your startup venture then you need to represent your blog with a domain name that you have control over. This means you would need to book a domain name that represents youy business.
If you plan generating revenue on your blog then you need to have the ability to display advertising to start of with.
If you plan allowing others to submit guest posts on your blog then you need to be networking with other bloggers within the blogosphere.

These are important questions that you need to address so that your blogging path is moving towards a success point.

Choosing the right platform for your blog

This is a question that i asked myself when I decided to start my blog. Though there were so many reviews of this platform and that i did go through the same phase that you may be going through which is why not this platform and why that? These questions can make you go a bit crazy at times especially if you are not from a technical background. The simple answer to this is see what other professional blogger’s within the top 100 use. The tool is not the solution its the matter and the impact you have on your readers.

These are some of the top blogging platforms out there

  • Blogger, owned by Google
  • WordPress: WordPress.com (hosted by them) and WordPress.org (selfhosted)
  • Tumblr
  • Six Apart : Typepad (hosted by them) and Movable Type (selfhosted).
  • We could go in depth and do a complete thesis paper on which platform is the best, what are the pros and cons?, etc etc. I am not going to go through that exercise as i don’t believe that complicating my life is worth it and i don’t want to complicate your life either. If you would like to do some research on which platform you should choose then i recommend that you view this image that was created by wpbeginner

The data source was gathered by Darren Rowse from problogger. He is awesome and I trust his data. I hope you will too :-)

Now I am assuming that you are convinced that WordPress is the way to go.  Now the next set of questions we need to tackle are:

    What’s Your Budget?

As a startup i know the feeling where you probably are working full time to support your business or working in the business to grow the company. So budgets for your blogging effort do play an important role. To have a blog you will need to budget for the following. All values are in USD.

  • The Blog Platform – WordPress is free – $0
  • Install your wordpress site for you – Range from $40 – $250
  • If choosing a free design template for your blog – Modifications like logo etc – $80
  • Custom Design Blog template – $250 – $500
  • Booking Your Domain name Range from – $5 – $15
  • Hosting your Blog per month cost – $10 – $25
  • Monthly maintenance of your blog (Optional) – $75 – $100
  • Blog Training if you require (Optional) monthly budget – $100
  • My humble recommendations:

  • If you are planning on booking a domain go with enom they are pretty good
  • If you plan finding a hosting provider then do go with Hostgator they are reliable and have online customer support
  • Choose a free design blog template initially to get you started
  • Request a technical person to install your wordpress site for you.
  • I would request an upgrade of your blog platform every 6 months so that you are with the latest version for the blog platform.
  • If you are not a technical person and want to move quickly to allow your blog to perform then i recommend that you go through a short coaching program rather than take the long route. Again this is your choice. To be honest when i started i was like no i am going to do this myself, went to libraries, watched youtube videos and it got a bit frustrating. Then one day at the spur of the moment i enrolled for a program followed through a structured approach and then started planning my blogs better.
  • Once we have understood how much budgets are involved and whether you can afford this cost, we then move forward to the next phase which is

    How technically capable are you?

After answering the questions of budget you need to answer how much are you willing to do on your own without wasting time and effort. remember our goal is to launch our startup venture not to be developers or designers. This is a hard call but a worth while question to ask your self. Some of the tasks that i do recommend that you outsource initially are the following:

Initial tasks to Outsource for your blog

  • Configuring the Blog Platform
  • Installing the plugins necessary for your blog
  • Installing the template for your blog
  • Configuring your business email address based on domain, here use Goggle Apps
  • Installing an Analytical tool to track your blogs performance - Google Analytics is free and a good tool
  • Setting up feedburner to manage your blog post feeds
  • Then you need to block time out over the weekend if possible or when you have time to focus to plan the following:

Planning the Initial Steps for setting up your blog:

  • Structuring your Blog
  • Choosing the right blog categories for your blog
  • Learning how to resize images
  • Learning how to Create, Edit, update blog posts
  • Learning the importance of tags
  • Learning how to choose keywords while planning your posts
  • Learning the basics of SEO
  • Learning the basics of social media
  • Once you are sorted in this area then the last and most important phase is to trust your instinct and put a date on when you will have your blog setup. No day and time is a good one, you just need to get moving.

    Summary

To summarise what we have learnt in today’s post:

  • We need to focus on is getting things moving
  • Planning our budget
  • Time commitment
  • Here’s to a successful Blog setup and implementation. To be sure that blogging is the right path for you you could refer to my previous post
