How to write a blog post that helps your readers

August 12th, 2010 | 1 Comment | Posted in Digital News, Web Business Life Strategy

In today’s social media world, blogging has picked up as another tool that we should use to keep our content fresh and appealing. There was a time I wished that the whole world would love my writing style but alas it was a painful process of understanding and rethinking the process of how to capture my audience in a nice way. I want to share with you a few ideas on how to write great blog posts. I have recently understood this theory and was able to experiment this on my own blog.

The first thing to remember is that blog post do not necessarily make it based on the quantity of content. It’s all about the quality that you provide in the post. The immediate question that pops up in the mind is how the hell do you measure this quality? Well it’s simple when you ask someone for advice and they give you a short precise solution of how to go about things would that not be quality? The same with your blog post write it for your friend not for your potential customer. Don’t focus on a sales pitch.

This is the exercises that I have been doing lately and I hope that you could follow some of these exercises as well:

Exercise 1: Plan my posts for the week

Yes i know this can be dreadful especially if you don’t have time on your side. Trust me I went through this last year where i would just write a blog post here and there hoping to get some traffic. The reality was my blog was not planned properly. Then I started reading all about how to run a successful blog and my mind was full of Information. I still struggled to the implementation phase. I don’t want you to go through this painful process, it’s really not worth it. The bottom line that I want to convey to you is you need to plan the structure of what you are going to post one week in advance to make things effective.

Your blog post should have

  • A catchy headline
  • An Introduction of why this post adds value to their life
  • Explanation of what the topic is about
  • Any examples to back your explanation
  • A conclusion of the topic
  • A call to action
  • Exercise 2: Your blog post should have catchy headlines

This is the most tricky part of the complete blog post. There was a time where i would spend at least 15 mins thinking about what headline should the post convey. It’s confusing at times because you are drawn towards either focusing on keywords to optimise your blog post or you focus on creating a funky blog post headline with no relevant keywords. My honest feedback is to focus on keywords and at the same time make the headline interesting.

Headline Examples: Want more clients then follow my steps
Headline Example for Search engines: Top 10 steps to powerful online promotion for lead generation

You notice that the Headline example for search engines will gain more popularity because it will be found easier due to words like

  • Online promotion
  • Lead generation
  • So make sure you have a balance of using keywords and making the headline sound interesting as well. Think about why you click on a specific article, it’s mainly because of how the headline is crafted. So determining the right headline for your post can make the initial difference.

Exercise 3:An Introduction of why this post adds value to their life

Notice this exercise is all about asking questions and showing your reader why this plays an impact on their life. If you are not planning on writing a blog why would you even bother clicking on this post? You need to ask questions so that your reader’s think with you. Once you have grabbed their attention the next step is to layout the steps that you plan taking to answer these questions.

Example: So if you are targeting people in the corporate world you could ask questions such as

  • How do you Find Work/Life Balance?
  • How do deal with inappropriate Language in the Workplace?
  • How do you reinvent yourself in a recession?
  • These questions make your reader think about what they may be going through.

Exercise 4: Provide examples to back your explanation
If you noticed in this post I try and explain a point and then give you a few examples. Examples are a great way to connect with your readers. When you write imagine yourself as a movie writer. You are the guy behind the scenes making sure that your audience loves the movie. In movies we see scenes such as:

  • Happy moments
  • Sad moments
  • Action
  • Pensive moments
  • So the same way in your blog you need to provide examples by

  • telling a story
  • provide quotes from people who are known in the industry
  • provide testimonials
  • provide statistical data
  • Exercise 5: A conclusion of the topic
When you start a story which is your post you give your audience an overview of the story, then you build on this story and then you need to have a conclusion which pretty much summarizes what you have explained above.

Don’t keep your readers puzzled or confused, always make sure that they leave your site wanting to come back for more.

Exercise 6: A call to action
This should be there on every post. I neglected this area earlier on when i started my blogging career. I am not expert in blogging but what i have observed and read is that a call to action is helping your readers understand what to do next. It’s guiding them through a process rather then selling to them. So people who read your blog could be requested to

  • Like your post
  • Tweet about it
  • comment on your blog post
  • subscribe to your email newsletter
  • buy a product that you think would be valuable to them
  • Last but not the least just be yourself and people who like your personality will flock to you. It’s not about stressing out to get your blog to be number 1. It’s about wanting to be liked by the people who care about you and love you for your content.

Thank you for reading this post. I hope you have got some insight into writing your next blog post. My call to action for you today are the following:

  • Plan your post at least a week in advance
  • Research the keywords you are wanting to target
  • Use those keywords in your headline and blog descriptions
  • Have a structured layout for your post
  • If you like this post then please tweet it, comment below or just subscribe to my email newsletter.
  • Love you guys and have an awesome weekend.
