How do you monitor your staff in today’s world?

June 20th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Digital News, Web Business Life Strategy

Work for an organisation that values you as a human being and not as another unit in the process chain. Organisations need to realize that if people fear using their computers or fear being tracked the productivity will be lower than you think. With fear you get people trying to cover their footsteps. So how do you deal with Employees who are spending too much time chatting or browsing the Internet rather than getting some work done?

monitoring

Here are a few ways to get you started:

  • Have a formal policy that states what you can and cannot do on the internet, email, chats, etc during working hours.
  • Make sure that everyone reads this and has understood the policy
  • Managers should request for feedback on the policy and if there are any questions about certain aspects written on the policy than a FAQ section should be created as a reference.
  • This policy needs to be reviewed on a 3 month basis to see if the policy needs any updates
  • State exactly what is being monitored and the consequences of violating the policy.
  • Have procedures in place when violations have been discovered.
  • Should there be a criminal offense or law suit due to violation of usage such as certain files being leaked out than procedure of how to preserve the data and evidence should be formally explained. There needs to be a certain guide to handle this situation.
  • Should you know of some additional points that could help my reader base please do leave a comment so that I could have this post updated.
If you are an IT manager and you need to monitor your staff, do the right thing and keep the policy and procedures transparent. All the best.
