Telcos to target social web a drive by Sony Ericsson
Antony Beswick from NZ is heading the initiative held by technology giant Sony Ericsson to help telcos get a piece of the social web. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Sony Ericsson unveiled a web-hosted “white label” portal. This white label application lets mobile network operators provide their own-branded social networking sites to allow their customers to upload photos and videos taken with camera phones to sites such as Facebook and Bebo.
Mr Beswick says the goal is not to pick a fight with Facebook but allow Telcos to be part of the social graph. “If you go to a user initially and say ‘come to my Telecom NZ portal’, they will say ‘why?’,” he says.
“But if the operator says ‘snap a photo and upload it in real time to your favourite social networks’ – that is how you attract the users.”
